What I'm Wearing All Summer: My Non-Negotiables

The pieces I reach for every single week — the ones I'd buy again in a heartbeat, and the ones that earn their place in my Florida summer rotation.

I live in Florida.

Which means my "summer" is basically eight months long, and by the time most of the country is just starting to break out their sundresses, I've already been in mine since March.

After enough years of styling content from a coastline that's humid by 8 AM and brutal by noon, I've figured out exactly which pieces are worth investing in — and which ones get worn once, sweat through, and forgotten in the back of the closet.

These are my non-negotiables. The pieces I'd repurchase tomorrow if my closet flooded (which, given Florida summer storms, isn't entirely out of the question). The ones that earn their place in heavy rotation because they work — in the heat, in the humidity, in real life.

This is what I'm wearing all summer.

1. The Linen Set

One purchase, three outfits, infinite outings.

A good linen set is the single hardest-working piece in my summer closet. The top doubles as a chic going-out blouse with denim shorts. The bottoms work with a basic white tank for errands. Together, they're a complete outfit that looks intentional without trying.

What to look for: A relaxed (not boxy) fit, a soft neutral color — cream, sand, soft sage, or warm white. Avoid anything too stiff or structured; linen should drape.

My current favorites: Faithfull the Brand, Amanda Uprichard, and Posse. If you want under $100, J.Crew and Aritzia both make beautiful linen sets that look way more expensive than they cost.

Why it earns its place: Versatility, breathability, and the fact that it actually looks better slightly wrinkled. Linen forgives you. You don't have to iron. You don't have to fuss. You just wear it.

2. White Denim Shorts

The unsung hero of summer.

I know — every fashion person and their mother has been talking about long denim shorts. But the white version is what actually carries an outfit.

Why? Because white denim shorts elevate everything you pair them with. A plain tee feels more pulled together. A tank top feels intentional. A linen blazer thrown over them feels like vacation.

What to look for: A mid-rise, slightly relaxed fit that hits at the longest part of your thigh. Not too short (you want polish, not exposure), not too baggy (you want shape).

My current favorites: AGOLDE, Mother, and Citizens of Humanity. The Frame Le Slouch in white is unreal.

Why it earns its place: They're the answer when you don't know what to wear. They photograph beautifully. And they look expensive in a way that regular blue denim sometimes doesn't.

3. The Slip Dress

The closest thing to wearing nothing at all — but still looking like you tried.

A bias-cut slip dress is the laziest outfit that still looks completely intentional. Throw it on with sandals for dinner. Add a denim jacket for daytime. Layer it over a white tee for a slightly more covered look that's still effortless.

What to look for: A bias-cut construction (it skims the body in a way that's flattering on every shape), midi length, and either silk or a high-quality satin. Skip anything that feels too stiff or shiny.

My current favorites: Reformation makes the best slip dresses on the market right now. Anthropologie has affordable dupes that hold up surprisingly well.

Why it earns its place: It's the one piece in my closet that I can throw on at 6 PM after a beach day, run a brush through my hair, and walk out the door feeling instantly put-together.

4. The Easy Coverup

Because looking polished should never require sweating through your outfit.

I call this category "the thing you throw on" — and it can be a lot of different pieces. A linen button-down worn open. A cotton kimono. A breezy duster. An oversized men's shirt borrowed from your husband's closet (yes, really).

The point is the layer — it adds shape, intention, and a little coverage when you need it, without trapping any heat.

What to look for: Lightweight cotton, linen, or gauze. Long enough to wear over a swimsuit if needed. Neutral colors so it pairs with everything.

My current favorites: Free People always nails this category. Faithfull, Posse, and J.Crew also have beautiful options. And if you want a true investment piece, the Vince linen shirt collection is unmatched.

Why it earns its place: It instantly takes a swimsuit-and-shorts situation from beach-day to lunch-out without you having to change. That's the magic.

5. The Strappy Sandal

Because flip-flops are for the pool, and nothing else.

I get it — Florida is a flip-flop-heavy state. But if you want your summer outfits to actually look styled, the strappy flat sandal is non-negotiable. T-strap, fisherman, gladiator, ankle-tie — the silhouette doesn't matter. What matters is that it has some structure.

What to look for: Leather (not synthetic — it'll mold to your foot beautifully), neutral colors (tan, bone, white, black), and a low or flat heel for daytime versatility.

My current favorites: Ancient Greek Sandals are iconic and last forever. Tkees and Jeffrey Campbell make great affordable options. And the Bottega lido sandals if you want a forever piece.

Why it earns its place: They're what makes a casual outfit look intentional. A linen dress with flip-flops reads "beach." The same dress with strappy sandals reads "I planned this."

6. Statement Sunglasses

The single most underrated styling tool in your closet.

I will die on this hill. The right pair of sunglasses can do more for an outfit than a $200 top.

I rotate between three pairs every summer: oversized round cat-eyes for the European vacation feel, a slim 90s-inspired pair for an editorial moment, and classic aviators for everyday.

What to look for: A frame shape that flatters your face, lenses that actually block UV (not just look cute), and quality construction. This is one area where the brand really does matter — cheap sunglasses break, scratch, and warp in heat.

My current favorites: Celine, Saint Laurent, and Ray-Ban for forever pieces. DIFF and Quay for affordable versions that still look elevated.

Why it earns its place: They make every outfit instantly cooler. Literally and figuratively.

7. The Raffia Bag

The summer-only piece that justifies its existence every single time.

A raffia or straw bag screams summer in the best way. It's the easiest way to make a basic outfit feel seasonal, and it goes with literally everything in my warm-weather rotation.

What to look for: A clean shape (avoid anything too crafty or beachy if you want it to feel elevated), a sturdy handle, and ideally a small interior lining so things don't fall through.

My current favorites: Loewe and Saint Laurent for investment pieces. Sezane, Anthropologie, and Mango for under $150.

Why it earns its place: It transitions from beach to lunch to dinner without ever feeling out of place. A leather bag in summer just feels heavy. A raffia bag feels like the season itself.

8. Gold Jewelry, Layered

Because nothing makes a basic outfit look more expensive faster.

A tank top and white denim shorts on their own = nice. The same outfit with three gold chains, a stack of bracelets, and a thin stack of rings = editorial.

I don't take my gold jewelry off in summer. I shower in it. I swim in it. I wear it to bed. The result is that my jewelry develops that gorgeous lived-in patina that you can't fake, and my outfits always look finished.

What to look for: Solid 14k gold or high-quality gold-fill (NOT plated — it'll tarnish in the salt and humidity). Mix textures and lengths.

My current favorites: Jenny Bird for everyday delicate pieces. Catbird for unique fine jewelry. Electric Picks for affordable demi-fine. And vintage estate jewelry from Etsy for the really special pieces.

Why it earns its place: It's the difference between "I got dressed" and "I styled this." Every single time.

9. The Going-Out Mini

Because every summer needs at least one dress that says "I'm here to have fun."

Most of my closet leans elevated, but every woman needs one dress that's just playful. Something that's a little flirty, a little fun, and impossible to wear without smiling.

For me, it's usually something with a fitted bodice, a flouncy skirt, and a fun pattern or color. The kind of dress that gets compliments before you've even had a drink.

What to look for: A flattering silhouette you feel confident in. A length that works for your comfort level. And — most importantly — a fabric you can actually move and dance in.

My current favorites: Reformation, NBD, FARM Rio, and SAU Lee all make great going-out dresses. For something more elevated, Cult Gaia and Aje are incredible.

Why it earns its place: Sometimes you just need to put on a dress that makes you feel something. This is that dress.

10. SPF You'll Actually Wear

The most important piece of "summer styling" no one talks about.

This isn't a clothing item, but it's absolutely non-negotiable. The single biggest difference between women who age beautifully and women who don't isn't genetics or expensive creams — it's daily sunscreen.

I wear it under everything. I reapply at lunch. I keep a stick in my bag.

What to look for: SPF 30 minimum, broad-spectrum, mineral if you can tolerate the finish (zinc oxide is the gold standard), and something elegant enough that you'll actually use it.

My current favorites: EltaMD UV Clear (the dermatologist favorite), Supergoop Unseen, and Kopari for body. For face, the Summer Fridays and Caudalie are unmatched.

Why it earns its place: Because no outfit looks expensive on skin that's been damaged. Your future self will thank you.

The Bottom Line

Building a summer wardrobe isn't about quantity — it's about having the right pieces that work hard for you when it counts. These ten are the ones I come back to year after year. They're the foundation. They're what makes Florida summer feel like vacation instead of survival.

Buy fewer things. Buy better things. Wear them constantly. That's the formula.
